Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Postpartum Doula

Baby on the way? Reach out to a postpartum doula!

Congratulations! You’ve got a baby on the way, and you’re considering hiring a postpartum doula.

Most (if not all) postpartum doulas will offer a free consultation call, where you can get to know them and find out more about what to expect. Here are a few questions that you may want to ask!

  1. When would you start your time with us after the arrival of our baby?

  2. What kind of feeding support do you provide? Do you have any lactation training? If I decide to formula feed, will you be able to support me?

  3. In the event of any unforeseen circumstances, do you work with a backup doula? Can I meet them?

  4. How do you adapt your support to accommodate specific cultural preferences?

  5. I have older children. What experience do you have supporting families with toddlers and young children, in addition to newborns? Do you support partners and other family members?

  6. I’m concerned that I’ll have emotional difficulties after my baby arrives. What kind of emotional support can you provide?

  7. Are there limitations to the scope of your practice as a doula?
