FAQ

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula provides emotional, physical and practical support to birthing parents after the arrival of one or more new babies. She might care for the newborn while a new mother rests, provide evidence-based knowledge and assistance with breastfeeding and infant care, help with light housework and preparing meals, and will refer parents to specialists when needed. Overall, a postpartum doula’s role is to support and guide the birthing parent through the transition to life with their new baby, and help parents feel confident in their ability to provide this care on their own.

Why work with a postpartum doula?

Research shows a number of benefits of working with a postpartum doula. Postpartum support has been shown to lower risks of postpartum depression and anxiety, and increase chances of breastfeeding success. In addition, new parents report feeling more comfortable in their new roles and that their lives are more manageable after receiving care from a postpartum doula.*

My services are limited to postpartum support at this time. I’m happy to put you in touch with some excellent birth doulas in Toronto.

Can any family work with a postpartum doula?

Yes! Any family welcoming a new infant into their family can benefit from a postpartum doula, including families who have adopted or used a surrogate.  I also provide support to people experiencing pregnancy loss.
