Liz has been a birth doula since July 2001, earning her DONA certification in December 2004. She has one daughter, whose birth was an illustration of how calm birth can be! Liz earned her Master of Public Health from Tulane in 2008. Her focus was in Maternal and Child Health with a particular interest in maternal morbidity reduction. As a capstone project, Liz spent six months in India, working for PSI-India. From November 2008 to March 2010, Liz worked for SmartStart Oklahoma. This non-profit organization promotes child health and school-readiness by coordinating among community services for children age 0 to 5. Liz had a significant role in the promotion of enrollment in the SoonerCare program, Oklahoma's Medicare program. Beginning in March 2010, Liz will be employing her epidemiology and statistical skills in a study of traumatic brain injury with the Oklahoma Department of Health. Liz participates as often as possible in volunteer emergency response programs. Over the past two years, this has included the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corp (MRC), a Norman-based disaster action team and the Red Cross. Liz still occasionally presents information on prenatal care and the delivery process. She has given this talk as a guest instructor in UCO Early Child Development classes and at prenatal classes for new mothers. The presentation itself (512KB) is here for reference. Liz remains interested in improving childbirth and on the effect of disasters on women and children. She hopes to further both interests through further formal education in midwifery and emergency management. |
